What Does a DWI Program Entail?

Jan 12, 2023

Driving under the influence or intoxicated is never a good choice. A DWI intervention course can be your second chance if you have made an error in judgment of DWI. A DWI intervention course can help you get on the path to getting your license back and prevent you from making the same mistake again. Here's what you need to know about a DWI intervention course.

The Court May Order You to Take the Course

In most states this course is a mandatory result of the situation. In some states, you can take the course before the sentencing to get ahead of the problem. In other states, you must have a court referral. This course may become a part of your probation agreement. That means you will violate your probation if you don't finish the course in a specific amount of time.

Your Lawyer May Recommend You Take the Course

Some DWI lawyers recommend that their clients take this course before their court trial. Being proactive may influence the judge and prosecution to go easier on you. If you can show that you are making lifestyle changes and understand the serious nature of the offense, you may be offered a more favorable plea deal.

It's a Relatively Short Program

According to the Department of Corrections, this standardized program is 15 hours, broken up into a few different classes. The course aims to teach people the dangers of drinking and drug abuse, and what role those things have in breaking the law. Some of the information shared in these classes is shocking and can make a huge impression.

The Course Is About Changing Behaviors

DWI intervention course is not a punishment. It is an opportunity. It's an opportunity to look at DWI through a different lens and to hopefully correct behaviors. Knowledge can be powerful in how people move through life. This course can help save lives by helping people change how they view DWI risk.

If you've been ordered to or chosen to take a DWI intervention course, you may be able to do it right online. Speak to your clerk of court or the Department of Health and Human Services to find an approved course in your area. You can also give us a call for more information!
